The Alzheimer's Disease Research Center At Mount Sinai
Founded in 1984, the Mount Sinai Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) is a nationally recognized clinical program and research facility dedicated to the study and treatment of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.

At the ADRC, a team of experts in geriatrics diagnose diseases associated with memory disorders. They come together from such related disciplines as geriatric psychiatry and psychology, neurology, pathology and radiology to coordinate efforts to find a cure. In addition to providing diagnoses and patient care, these clinicians and neuroscientists conduct research into the causes of dementia – always looking for answers and eventual cures. The ADRC also sponsors educational programs for healthcare professionals and community groups. And perhaps most perceptively, the ADRC offers caregiver programs and support groups to those who are most deeply affected by Alzheimer’s – the family.

Mount Sinai’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is supported by the National Institute on Aging, a branch of the National Institutes of Health. With a goal to improve diagnosis, delay disease progression and enhance the well-being of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as study the normal aging process, it is one of the most progressive institutions in the country.

The Alzheimer's Foundation Of America
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is a nonprofit foundation founded in 2002 by a consortium of organizations to fill a gap on quality care and service on a national level for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. AFA is dedicated to meeting the educational, social, emotional and practical needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as their caregivers and families. AFA fills the gap that exists on a national level by raising public awareness and lending expertise to healthcare professionals.

AFA is headquartered in New York with resource centers staffed by AFA-trained individuals throughout the United States. It is governed by a board of trustees and is supported by medical, legal and other advisory boards. As a result, AFA has established strategic partnerships with other national organizations that share similar goals.

A Call To Action
The causes of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are still unknown, although current research indicates that they may be triggered by any number of factors, including old age, genetic makeup, head injuries and myriad environmental factors. In most cases, Alzheimer’s disease progresses slowly by stages, starting with mild forgetfulness to severe dementia. On the average, from diagnosis, individuals live from eight to ten years, although they may exist up to twenty years.

Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease at this time, researchers are continually testing various drug therapies that will control symptoms and perhaps someday halt the progression of the disease. Currently, four drugs have been approved for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease: Cognex®, Aricept®, Exelon® and Reminyl®. One drug, NamendaTM has been approved for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s. All of these drugs serve to mitigate the symptoms by slowing down the decline in mental functioning, bringing hope to so many.

Between the expert diagnosticians, researchers and clinicians at Mount Sinai’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the extensive programs and support being provided by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, the answers to this mysterious affliction are on the horizon.

If my family and I can help alleviate any others’ suffering, then all of our efforts will have been worthwhile. Please join us in working with Mount Sinai ADRC and AFA to find a cure within the next decade for Alzheimer’s disease. The Mann Foundation’s Annual Mann of the Year Awards
